Cardiac CT Course for Radiographers

A seven-hour live online course for radiographers who scan, or are about to scan, cardiac CT. It runs from setting up a service through indications, scanning parameters, patient preparation and heart rate control, TAVI scanning and image interpretation, and ends with live case reviews. The course has run for five years and is taught by a consultant radiologist, a superintendent cardiac CT radiographer and a consultant cardiologist.

A course with a track record

The Cardiac CT Course for Radiographers has run for five years through Radiology Seminars, with more than ten cohorts and delegates from NHS trusts, private centres and university hospitals in more than 30 countries. It is now run jointly with the Cardiac Imaging Academy, with the same faculty and curriculum, and Radiology Seminars continue to handle enrolment. Each year the programme is revised in response to feedback from delegates scanning cardiac CT in their own departments.

Who it is for

Radiographers and radiologists stepping into cardiac CT for the first time, and those already scanning who want to fill the gaps. Diagnostic radiographers and advanced practitioners rotating into cardiac CT treat it as their foundation course. Superintendent and lead radiographers use it to prepare a team before a new service opens. Radiology trainees consolidating cardiac CT sit alongside the radiographer cohort, and departments planning an expansion often book several staff onto the same date.

No prior cardiac CT experience is required. A CPD-accredited certificate is provided on completion and the course is suitable for trust-funded study leave.

Curriculum: seven modules in one day

From setting up the service to understanding the report. Someone new to cardiac CT leaves with a working framework; someone with three years' experience leaves with an up-to-date one.

Setting up a cardiac CT service. Scanner requirements, staffing, governance, IR(ME)R, MDT integration, and the operational decisions that decide whether a new service works.
Indications and patient selection. Current NICE guidance and ESC pathways, the clinical questions cardiac CT answers, the patients who should not be scanned, and the alternatives when CT is not the right test.
Scanning parameters and protocols. Calcium score, CCTA, structural and FFR-CT protocols, explained vendor-neutrally with the reasoning behind each parameter.
Patient preparation and rate control. The pre-scan checklist, beta-blocker timing, GTN, breath-hold coaching, and what to do when none of it works.
TAVI scanning. Set-up, acquisition, contrast, the hand-over to post-processing, and the errors that most often delay a TAVI work-up.
Image interpretation and reporting. What the cardiologist and radiologist look for: coronary anatomy, plaque, structured report templates, and why understanding the report makes you better at the scanner.
Case reviews and discussion. Live review of real cases: acquisition decisions, artefact recognition, and how to salvage a difficult study. Delegates consistently rate this the most useful hour of the day.

Do I need prior cardiac CT experience?

No. Module 1 starts with setting up a service and assumes no cardiac CT background. The case review session at the end of the day gives experienced delegates plenty of advanced material.

Will I receive a CPD certificate?

Yes. The course is CPD accredited by the College of Radiographers and a certificate of completion is issued after the course, suitable for your CPD Now portfolio and HCPC re-registration.

What if I cannot attend on the day?

The course is taught live. If you cannot attend the date, contact Radiology Seminars at info@radiologyseminars.co.uk about future dates or on-demand access.

Can my trust pay, and is there a group rate?

Yes. Radiology Seminars issue invoices to trusts and offer a discount for groups from one department. Email info@radiologyseminars.co.uk with the number of delegates.

Is the course scanner specific?

No. The teaching is vendor neutral and applies to current Siemens, GE, Philips and Canon scanners, with vendor-specific notes where they change the answer.
