Cardiac MRI Course for Radiographers
A full day of live online teaching for radiographers and MRI technologists who perform or support cardiac MRI. Eight modules take you from MRI safety and patient screening through cardiac anatomy and imaging planes, protocols and acquisition, ECG gating and breath-hold strategies, cine and function, flow and valvular assessment, perfusion and late gadolinium enhancement, to artefacts, troubleshooting and workflow. Clinical cardiac MRI cases and practical protocol guides are included.

Why a course for radiographers
Cardiac MRI is the most radiographer-dependent examination in the department. In an hour-long study the radiographer makes a decision every few minutes that determines whether the next sequence is diagnostic: the breath-hold strategy, the gating method, the inversion time, whether to repeat. This course is built around those decisions. It has run for several years through Radiology Seminars and is revised each year from the feedback of delegates scanning cardiac MRI in their own units. It is now run jointly with the Cardiac Imaging Academy; Radiology Seminars continue to handle enrolment.
Who it is for
Radiographers and MRI technologists who perform or support cardiac MRI examinations. Diagnostic and advanced practitioner radiographers moving into cardiac MRI are the core audience. Imaging assistants and clinical fellows on a cardiac MRI rotation, superintendents preparing a team for a service launch, and established teams wanting an update on gating, flow, perfusion and late gadolinium all attend.
The course assumes you already scan competently in MRI, whether body, neuro or MSK. It does not teach MRI physics from first principles; it applies MRI principles to the heart. A CPD-accredited certificate is provided on completion and the course is suitable for trust-funded study leave.
Curriculum: eight modules in one day
- MRI safety and patient screening for cardiac studies. The cardiac-specific safety questions: devices, implants, screening and the decisions made at the scanner.
- Cardiac anatomy and standard imaging planes. Planning a study from the cardiac axes outward: two-chamber, four-chamber, short axis and outflow views.
- Cardiac MRI protocols and acquisition techniques. The sequence families and how a standard cardiac protocol is built and adapted to the clinical question.
- ECG gating and breath-hold strategies. Prospective and retrospective gating, navigators, and how to manage arrhythmia and poor breath-holders.
- Cine imaging and cardiac function assessment. Acquiring cines that quantify reliably: coverage, slice positioning and the common errors.
- Flow imaging and valvular assessment. Phase-contrast principles, plane selection and velocity encoding, and what makes flow data reportable.
- Contrast-enhanced studies: perfusion and late gadolinium enhancement. Stress and rest perfusion set-up, contrast timing, inversion time selection and the common sources of late gadolinium error.
- Artefacts, troubleshooting and workflow optimisation. Recognising and correcting artefacts on the day, salvage strategies, and running an efficient cardiac MRI list.
By the end of the day you will be able to screen patients safely for cardiac MRI, plan the standard imaging planes, apply gating and breath-hold strategies, acquire cine and flow studies, run contrast-enhanced perfusion and late gadolinium protocols, and recognise and correct the common artefacts.

How do I book?

Yes. It is the same course, faculty and curriculum. It is now run jointly with the Cardiac Imaging Academy.
Do I need prior cardiac MRI experience?
No cardiac MRI experience is needed, but the course assumes you already scan competently in MRI (body, neuro, MSK or similar). If you are new to MRI altogether, 12 to 18 months of general MRI practice first is advisable.
Will I receive a CPD certificate?
Yes. A CPD-accredited certificate of completion is issued after the course, suitable for your CPD Now portfolio, HCPC re-registration and as evidence for advanced practice applications in cardiac MRI.
What if I cannot attend on the day?
The course is taught live. If you cannot attend the date, contact Radiology Seminars at info@radiologyseminars.co.uk about future dates or on-demand access.
Can my trust pay, and is there a group rate?

No. The teaching applies to current Siemens, GE and Philips systems, with vendor-specific notes where they change the answer.
